Sgt. Pepper's Strawberry Jam

I’ve been quiet for a little while, but not for lack of listening to tons of great new music. I’ll be posting a lot soon.

And I will (knock on wood) be fixing my concert slump—mediocre Das Racist concert followed by missed Ra Ra Riot (and Yellow Ostrich, and Delicate Steve) concert snafu—this…

“Mediocre” is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about Das Racist live. They opened for Mike Posner on campus (who was clearly not the act I was there to see) and I wanted to sit on the floor and cry. They skipped their mic check and were so high I couldn’t understand anything they were saying. Still haven’t managed to listen to their stuff since. What a waste.

Ok so I was being generous. Here’s a more reasoned analysis:

  1. I am a big Das Racist fan. I love their stuff.
  2. They are boring live. Granted, I’m sure they were a little bit more excited to be headlining in a club in San Francisco than opening for Mike Posner at Williams.
  3. The club was awful and they forced the DR show to end super early so they could kick us all out and start letting in their usual tight-shirt bottle-service-buying clientele.
  4. They were probably too high for me to understand anything they were saying, but I know all the songs really well, so my mind tricked me into thinking it was coherent.
  5. Even in San Francisco, a large city with a good music scene, the show was nowhere near capacity. Maybe everyone else knew something about DR live that I didn’t.
  6. And yes, the sound system at the club was embarrassingly bad.

So I too have not listened to any of their stuff since seeing them live. I’m just too jaded. I wonder if they know that they’re losing some of their biggest fans by putting on a terrible show. I wonder if they care.
